欲少欲可滿(욕소욕가만)

事簡功可成(사간공가성)

敬天天乃保(경천천내보)

勤民民乃寧(근민민내녕)

小藝莫致慮(소예막치려)

大政宜致精(대정의치정)

욕망은 적어야 채울 수 있고

일은 간단해야 이룰 수 있다.

하늘을 공경해야 하늘이 나를 지켜 주고

백성을 사랑해야 백성이 편안해지네.

하찮은 활쏘기에는 마음 쓰지 말고

마땅히 큰 정사에 정성을 쏟아야지.

It is possible to fulfill one's own desire while his is small

It is possible to accomplish one's own duty while his is simple.

Heaven protects one's own life while he honor it

When people are loved, then they are comfortable.

I should never mind any trivial archer

But I must devote myself to do good politics.

제목 : 後園酌酒射帿仍書示諸臣(후원작주사후잉서시제신

            : 후원에서 술을 마시며 활쏘기를 하고 이어 글을 써서 신하들에게 보이다)

작자 : 세조

해설 : 특별한 제목을 붙이지 않고 쓴 시이다. 후원에서 신하들과 함께 활쏘기를 할 때, 어떤 신하가 세조의 뛰어난 활솜씨를 칭송하자 이 시를 썼다. 절구(4행시)도 아니고 율시(8행시)도 아닌 6행시라는 드문 형식을 취하고 있다. 꾸밈과 함축이 없이 일상어를 시적 형식에 담아 생각을 직설적으로 드러냄으로써, 격식에 얽매이지 않는 호방한 성품을 잘 보여 준다. 이런 성품은 특히 제 2구의 내용에서도 잘 드러난다. 세조는 무예에도 아주 능했고, 시는 간결하였다.

Title : Huwonjagju Sahuingseosi Jesin

        (: Drinking Alcohol at Backyard, Doing Archery, Writing afterwards and Showing it to the Servants)

Author: Sejo, the Seventh King of Joseon Kingdom (1455~1468)

Commentary: Written without a special title. When he bowed with his servants at backyard, a servant wrote this poem when he praised the excellent bow of King Sejo. It is a unique form of the six-line rhythm, which is not the 4th rhythm) nor the 8th rhythm), which can be understood as a poetic expression of everyday life. The distinctive form, straight-forward expression without embellishments and implications, shows a calm, unconventional character. This character is also revealed in the second phrase. Sejo was very good at martial arts, and his poetry was concise.
