雨饒郊野民心樂(우요교야민심락)

日暎京都喜氣新(일영경도희기신)

多慶雖云由積累(다경수운유적루)

只在爲君愼厥身(지재위군신궐신)

들판에 비 흠뻑 내리니 백성들 즐겁고

한양에 햇살 비치니 기쁨이 새로워라.

경사스러운 일은 선행을 쌓아야 찾아온다지만

한 나라 임금 되어 몸가짐을 삼가야지.

The fields are soaked, the people are joyful.

It is sunny in Hanyang, and a joy is new.

A happiness comes to build good deeds

I am a king, thus I must refrain from becoming evil.

제목 : 夢中作 (몽중작 : 꿈속에 짓다)

작자 : 세종

해설 : 세종 28년(1446) 9월 꿈속에서 짓고 두 아들 문종(文宗)과 세조(世祖)에게 알려 준 시이다. 제 3구는 《주역(周易) <문언전(文言傳)>》의 ‘적선지가 필유여경(積善之家 必有餘慶)’을 인용한 것이다. ‘선을 쌓은 집안에는 남는 경사가 있다’는 뜻인데, ‘여경(餘慶)’은 선한 일을 많이 행한 보답으로서 그 자손들이 받는 경사를 말한다. ‘累’는 다른 문헌에 ‘善’으로 적혀 전하기도 한다. 제 4구의 ‘신궐신(愼厥身)’은 《서경》에 나오는 ‘신궐신수(愼厥身修)’를 인용한 것이다. ‘삼가 그 몸(마음)을 닦는다’는 뜻이다. 《논어》의 ‘군자신기독(君子愼其獨 : 군자는 홀로 있을 때를 삼간다)’이라는 말도 같은 의미이다. ‘只在爲君’은 다른 문헌에 ‘只爲吾君(지위오군)’으로 적혀 전하기도 하는데, 만약 그렇다면 ‘다만 우리 임금 위해 몸가짐을 삼가야지.’란 뜻으로서, 두 왕자에게 간접적으로 당부하는 내용이 될 것이다.

Title : Mongjungjak (: Written in a dream)

Author: Sejong, the Fourth King of Joseon Kingdom (1418~1450)

Commentary : It was written in the midst of dream in September, 1446 (Sejong 28), and informed to his two sons Mong-jong and Sejo. The third phrase is quoted from the "Jeogseonjiga Pilyuyeogyeong" Juyeog (周易)'s <Muneonjeon> (文言傳). It means that  "In the house where the good is built, there is a happiness." "Yukyung" (餘慶) refers to the happiness as a reward that an household doing a lot of good work the descendants receive happiness as a reward. '累' is written as 'good' (善) in other documents. In the fourth verse, the "Singwolsin" refers to "Singwolsinsu" of  "Seokyeong." It means "to take care of his/her own body and mind." It is also the same meaning of "Gunjasingidog" (君子愼其獨), that is, gentleman refrains himself from evil mind when he is being alone. "Jiwiogun" (只在爲君) is also written in another poetry document as if the King Sejong had given advice to his two princes to do self-cultivation by themselves, indirectly or directly.
