否德承丕基(부덕승비기)

于今卄九稔(우금입구임)

歲連痒稼穡(세련양가색)

民屢奪餬飪(민루탈호임)

國事維其棘(국사유기극)

天災日又甚(천재일우심)

休提稱慶說(휴제칭경설)

但自夙宵懍(단자숙소름)

덕이 적은 몸이 나라를 물려받아 이제 스물아홉 해나 되었는데,

해마다 흉년이 들어 백성들은 죽도 먹지 못하는구나.

나랏일은 위태롭고 재해는 날로 심해지니,

칭송도 하지 말고 잔치도 하지 말라.

밤낮으로 내 몸가짐을 삼갈 때이다.

A virtueless man takes over the country Now it's twenty-nine years,

Every year there is a famine and my people cannot even eat their own soup.

Politic is hazardous and natural disaster grows day by day,

Do not praise me, nor do not have a feast for me.

It is a time for me to humble myself day and night.

제목 : 無題(무제 : 제목 없음)

작자 : 숙종

해설 : 즉위 30년에 즈음하여 왕의 존호(尊號)를 올리고 축하연을 베풀려 하자 이를 만류하면서 쓴 시이다. 존호는 임금이 살아있는 동안에 부르는 칭호이다. 이 시는 제목 없이 쓴 시로 보이는데, 이런 일은 드물지 않았다. 시작(詩作)이 일상 생활의 일부였던 옛 관습과 무관하지 않을 것이다. 숙종은 문예 진흥을 위해 많은 노력을 기울였고, 스스로도 800여 수의 많은 시를 남겼다.

Author: The King Sukjong, the 19th King of Joseon Kingdom (1647~1720)

Commentary: This poetry was written at the thirty years after His throne, when His servants tried to raise the honor of the King and to give a congratulatory message.

This poetry appears to have been written without a title, and this was not uncommon. This was because writing poetry was the old custom as well as a part of everyday life for kings in Joseon Kingdom. The King Sukjong made great efforts to promote literary arts, and left more than 800 poems on his own.
